To quote the wise words of anthropologist Matt Cartmill from Boston University, "Evolution doesn't act to yield perfection, it acts to yield function." Let's consider the evolution of the human spine, for example. Before our ancestors could walk upright, the spine adapted to support bipedal movement. Hence, we have the S-shaped spine that maintains our posture, absorbs shocks naturally, and distributes compressive forces during load-bearing activities such as walking, dancing, and lifting groceries.

The spine is perfectly imperfect. It possesses the capacity to be an optimal structure of stability, while also requiring the alignment of 33 vertebrae (24 of which are mobile) to maintain the natural inward-outward-inward curve. This supports a 9-11 lb head atop a foot comprising 26 bones. Given these complexities, it's hardly surprising that our bipedal spines, with their distinct S-shape, are prone to issues like back pain and herniated discs, especially when gravity consistently works against us.

This week we delve into how to support and handle our spines during a squat. So, stick around and let's explore this together!

CLASS THEMES

Monday, June 12th @ 12PM with Nicole

Everything in Pilates is a squat; we simply approach squats lying down. Why? Because it enhances our proprioception (our awareness of where our pelvis, low back, and ribcage are in space) and it eliminates the interference of gravity, allowing for better mastery of joint differentiation. All of these factors are crucial for understanding the movements of the spine in an anatomical squat. Let’s apply what you already know on the ground to standing on two feet.
