Ah, the knee joint - or, scientifically speaking, the tibiofemoral joint. What can we deduce from its name? "Tibio" alludes to the tibia, one of the lower leg bones. "Femoral" is a reference to the femur - your one and only thigh bone. Thus, the "knee" is the point where your thigh meets your lower leg.
Remember that recently, we explored the complexities of the talocrural joint, also known as the ankle. "Talo" pertains to your talus, the uppermost bone among the 26 in your foot. "Crural", in this context, refers to the tibia and fibula.
We know what you’re thinking: “Wait a second! Didn’t you just mention that the tibia articulates with the femur, making it a part of the knee?”
Indeed, dear readers. The tibia plays a role in forming both the knee and the ankle. Moreover, the femur follows a similar pattern, linking with both the tibia to create the knee and the pelvis to constitute the "hip."
So, why does this matter? Well, welcome to Pilates! We are all about enhancing full-body awareness and fostering uniform development. Both Monday’s class with Mollie and BONUS MELTⓇ into the Weekend POP UP class with Destinie are dedicated to exploring the knee while we squat, which, as you now understand, means we also need to consider the ankle and hip.
