Online Pilates newsletter

Over the past month, we've introduced a variety of props into our classes, infusing challenge and diversity into each movement. Did incorporating a beach towel into Mollie's class make your upper-ab curl feel more powerful? Or perhaps using a band with Nicole during single-leg circle offered a subtle, yet significant insight into your hip movement?

Regardless of the exercise, these props are here to assist and advance your Pilates practice. While your teachers might not always cue their use, feel free to bring them to class and employ them as you see fit. Remember, the essence of Pilates isn't just in the movements themselves, but also in how you adapt and personalize them to your own physical and wellness goals.

As we wrap up July, we're excited to share one of our favorite props: the wall. Join Nicole to explore how utilizing a wall can facilitate deeper connections within your body. Stay alert for our upcoming newsletter, too! With each new month, we introduce a fresh theme, and trust us, August offers an engaging and rewarding challenge. Looking forward to seeing you in class!

CLASS THEMES

Monday, July 31st @ 12PM with Nicole:

The wall can be our greatest teacher in understanding where our body is in space and the timing with which we sequence movement, especially when articulating the spine. Traditionally, Pilates mats come with a strap and handles so you can pull or push to find the appropriate force through the body to execute movements like Rollup or Rollover. Join me to learn how something as simple as a wall can be a great ally to your practice in the absence of a strap or hands-on cueing. Props needed: a wall you can lean against, put your feet on, and have space to lay down in front of.

Wednesday, August 2nd @ 8AM with Destinie:

BYOR: Bring Your Own Request! Getting over a summer cold? Let Destinie know! There’s movement to help with that.

BLOG POST

The saying "better late than never" is particularly fitting when starting a movement practice. Amid life's many obligations, maintaining physical health often takes a backseat. However, it's never too late to start. Click on the pic to read a post that tells the motivating story of a man (Destinie’s dad) who took up Pilates late in life. Through his experiences, we see how Pilates can enhance physical health and foster a stronger mind-body connection, reaffirming that it's never too late to embark on a journey towards improved health and wellness.

DEEP DIVE

Speaking of aging…let’s take a look at the science behind aging and staying physically active.

Taking up a new exercise routine, especially when you're older or have been inactive, may feel challenging. Questions like, "Is it too late?" or "Am I too unfit?" might cross your mind. However, numerous research findings and personal stories stand testament to the fact that it's never too late to kickstart an exercise regimen and reap its abundant benefits.

A 2019 study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine revealed that mid-lifers initiating physical activity had significantly reduced mortality risks compared to their inactive counterparts, regardless of previous activity levels or current health issues.

Similarly, a study in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity found that seniors participating in a Pilates program exhibited improvements in balance, strength, and flexibility. This indicates Pilates' potential as a safe and effective exercise option for older adults, enhancing physical health and overall life quality.

Pilates, focusing on core strength, balance, and flexibility, is apt for individuals starting or restarting an exercise routine later in life. Its low-impact, easily adaptable nature makes it a preferred choice for those wary of injuries. Another study in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science found that regular Pilates practice can enhance posture, muscle tone, balance, and joint mobility, while also alleviating stress and tension.

Regardless of your age or current fitness level, it's crucial to remember: the best time to start exercising is now. It's never too late to embark on a Pilates journey and enjoy the health and wellness benefits that come with it.
