We're Teachers, Not Instructors

Face with a swirl for the brain, deep thinking

When meeting new clients, we hear three common stories over and over again.

- "I took a Pilates class once. There were like 50 people. I felt lost and didn't really know what I was doing."

- "I've been working with a physical therapist for low back pain and have exercises to do at home but once I'm home, I don't remember how to do them. I don't feel confident doing them on my own, so I don't do them even though I should."

- "When I work with my trainer, it feels like I’m just going through a gambit of exercises. I don't know why we're doing what we're doing. I'm usually super sore afterwards, which I guess is nice, but I can't really explain what just happened."

Don't get us wrong, we're not knocking other professionals; every professional has their place on the health and wellness spectrum. We LOVE working in tandem with physical therapists and trainers, and that's really where Pilates falls into place. Pilates can be the missing link.

With the Pilates link, you'll better understand why the physical therapist chooses the exercises for you because we teach you about what's at work in your body when you move. A better understanding of the what's at work and why gives meaning to seemingly mundane exercises. This helps the exercises stick which translates to more confidence and motivation to practice at home.

Similarly, having your Pilates "with you" at a personal training session gives you better awareness of your body so that you can self-monitor for compensatory movements. Pilates teaches you how to self-monitor among other valuable mind-body skills. Better awareness of your own body helps you advocate for what you need and want out of your personal training sessions.

Now to address the big ol', no personal attention mat classes. Mat classes provide accessibility and are a budget friendly option. We fully acknowledge that some teachers overfill their classes which make it challenging for everyone to be seen. Pilates in Common takes pride in the fact that we're here to teach and to help you learn skills and concepts. We keep class sizes small because we want everyone to experience our personalized and educational approach. That’s why we created A Pilates December to Remember.

A Pilates December to Remember is an 8-class series of small group Pilates mat classes. Every class is themed, so you'll know the focus of the class prior to taking it. We welcome questions before, during, and after classes, so that you'll never feel unseen or like you're just going through the motions trying to keep up. Our teachers created these class themes from a personal place; these classes stem from the human experience.
